A crown involves the preparation of a tooth using a dental hand piece to create space for the crown. Impressions are taken, a temporary crown made and about 2 weeks later a permanent crown is glued into place. This is not removable by you or a dentist. Crowns can be made of ceramic not metal or gold. Different materials are used in different situations. The dentist will advise you on the most appropriate crown for any given specific situation.
A conventional bridge involves the preparation of the holding teeth usually on either side of a gap using a dental hand piece to create space for crowns. Impressions are taken, a temporary bridge is made and about two weeks later a permanent bridge made usually of metal and porcelain is glued into place. This is permanently fixed.
A veneer involves the preparation of a tooth using a dental handpick to create space for the veneer (only a small amount – about 1mm is removed from the front surface of the tooth). Impressions are taken and about two weeks later a ceramic veneer is glued (this is a fairly complex procedure) into place.
Crowns, bridges and veneers can greatly improve the appearance of damaged or broken-down teeth leaving you with a lovely smile.
Crowns, bridges and veneers have a good rate of success in dentistry however it is essential that your tooth cleaning is maintained to a high standard as one of the commonest causes of failure is poor tooth cleaning leading to decay or gum disease around the crown, bridge or veneer margins.
