Dental Implants

The Whites Dental Practice has been offering dental implants in Cardiff since 2013. In conjunction with Mr. Ian Seddon, we offer dental implants to clients in Cardiff, Newport, Chepstow, Barry and the surrounding areas in South Wales to help bring back full and happy smiles.

What is a dental implant?
A dental implant is essentially an artificial tooth root. The implant is normally made of titanium and is placed in the jawbone just like a tooth. An abutment is fitted on the top side of the dental implant which then forms the outside link for the crown of the new replacement tooth. In terms of cosmetic dentistry, dental implants are a relatively straight forward procedure, with outstanding, seamless results.

How long does a dental implant take to heal?
To achieve healing, the surrounding bone will grow to join with the titanium palate of the implant (osseointegration) which takes between 3 to 6 months to achieve stability so much so that it can support one or even more teeth.

The dental implants will give you the confidence to be able to smile before people in case of loss of teeth following injury or accident or even loss of teeth that is caused by old age. Teeth lost because of decay, gum disease or any causative trauma for that matter can be replaced with dental implants. The dental implants can be put to replace a single tooth or the entire set of teeth and will serve as a perfect alternative in terms of look, functionality as well as strength as the natural teeth.

Are dental implants permanent?
Dental implants interface directly with the jawbone and become bonded with surrounding bone tissue. Because of this, the implant itself is designed to be permanent but it is possible that the crown attached to it may need to be replaced due to normal wear and tear. It is common for crowns to need replacement in 15 to 20 years.

Factors such as care and maintenance, insufficient bone, smoking, teeth grinding, medical conditions, age, medications or treatments, or an inexperienced surgeon can influence whether a dental implant will fail.
